First race weekend of 2023: ✔️ Third year get First race weekend of 2023: ✔️
Third year getting to be the Clearwater Running Festival announcer.
Undoubtedly the best one yet.
(And not just because I’m finally leaving Clearwater without a wicked sunburn or windburn! Victory!)
I spent nearly 13 hours on the mic this weekend, getting to celebrate thousands of runners at the 5K, half marathon, marathon, and 50K.
Runners, you never cease to inspire, motivate, and make me cry. Finish lines are my favorite.
The @millenniumrunning team is world class, and the @alldayrunningco crew was an awesome addition to this year’s event. (Never thought I’d go in a sauna on the beach, but here we are!)
This is the greatest job in the world. The mornings are early, the days are long (and my days are the shortest compared to the rest of the team!), and my voice is in rough shape today. And I love it. I feel so lucky to get to be a tiny part of so many peoples’ big days and life-changing finish line moments.
Major bonus: I got to surprise @kristinaragukonis and all my favorite Tedesco girls on Kristina’s wedding day. A short, sweet moment that I will remember forever.
Kickass way to kickstart a new year in the announcer’s booth (or, in this case, tent). Thank you, @jmortiii and team, for having me. I loved it all.
Next stop: HOME!
It’s been a wonderful, restful (well, as restful It’s been a wonderful, restful (well, as restful as life can be with a fun and feisty four-year-old at home!) 2.5 months at home, and now I’m ready to hit the road again.
Time to get back to the races!
I’m pumped and humbled to be adding a few new events to my roster this year — including the @atlantatrackclub Publix Atlanta Marathon Weekend in February!
Fun twist on this trip — I’m not going to Atlanta to announce the races.
First, I’ll be hosting a live show at the race expo on Friday. Details coming soon! The expo is at the Georgia Aquarium, and I asked if instead of a live show, we could all swim with dolphins and pet the penguins. They laughed politely at that suggestion. I’m not ruling it out! 🐬
I’ll be running the 5K on Saturday, and then I’m trying something a little new, a little exciting, a little scary on Sunday.
More on that to come!
I’m excited to have a mic in my hand, and can’t wait to meet, hug, high five, and cheer for so many of you at the races this year.
(Come run with me in Atlanta, February 25–26! Use code ONTHERUN when you register and you’ll get 10% off!)
Also on the schedule for this year: Clearwater, Boston, Bayshore, and more! Let me know where I’ll be seeing you.

(“Erin from The Office!”)
Spoiler: We had just a bit of fun during the recording process.
And seriously: Ellie, who ran her first marathon in November, is an absolute dream. I’ve wanted to have her on the show for.e.ver, and it was such a gift to get to hear every detail from her day at the @nycmarathon. We laughed. A lot.
Plus: talking about our respective college thesis papers (we somehow wrote about basically the same thing! but she used Alanis Morrisette lyrics and I opted for Leonardo DiCaprio lines), “no such thing as TMI” bathroom talk, and some gushing and speculating about our favorite recent celebrity “scandal.”
It’s long. We covered a lot. Take us with you on your next run.
To conclude THIS thesis: I’ve always been a super fan of The Office (just try to out-quote me!), and I’m an even bigger fan of Ellie.
I’ve run six marathons. One — the 2011 @hampt I’ve run six marathons.
One — the 2011 @hamptonsmarathon — went as well as a first marathon can go. I got to the start and finish lines healthy (thank you, @coachcane), I was surrounded by friends and family, I raised $20K for the @crohnscolitisfoundation, I took lots of walk breaks, and I had a blast.
Such a blast, in fact, that I immediately signed up for my next one.
I registered for the 2012 @eugenemarathon. I was overzealous, and was both sick and injured within the first month of training. Marathon #2 was a DNS.
And then another DNS — for everyone — at the 2012 NYC Marathon-that-wasn’t.
My actual second marathon ended up being the Manchester City Marathon, where @emilysweats paced me to a 22-minute PR. It was my marathon dream day. It is still my PR.
I ran the 2013 @nycmarathon during a Crohn’s flare, and despite making many bathroom stops along the way, I had the best day ever.
In 2014, finally healthy, I trained my butt off for the Steamtown Marathon. I was in great shape — until race day. I was overcooked, and I bonked by mile 8. At the halfway point, I hid in a porta potty because I didn’t want to keep running. (Dramatic.) I finished walking, half an hour slower than my goal time.
I ran the NYC Marathon a few weeks later as a fun run. It was windy.
And then, 2016. Another attempt at a marathon PR. Training went great, until it didn’t. My Crohn’s started acting up after a 16-miler in Vermont on Labor Day Weekend, and it never really settled down. I completed that marathon only because I had @sarabeaney by my side from start to finish. A personal worst on the clock. A personal best by all other measures.
And then I stopped trying. Marathons felt like too much for me, even though I loved training for them and running (or walking) them.
I got pregnant, had a baby, moved several times…
And always knew I had unfinished business with 26.2.
I’m ready to try again.
And since I never made it to Eugene in 2012, that’s where I’m headed, 11 years later.
I will — if all goes well! — be running the 2023 Eugene Marathon in April.
Goals:
1. Make it to the start line healthy
2. Finish as happy as I did the last time I was on the track at Hayward Field!
Today’s episode — “The 2023 State of the Ali Today’s episode — “The 2023 State of the Ali on the Run Show” — is the 600th on the show.
It’s hard for me to comprehend that number. (Also incomprehensible: 17 million downloads, which the show surpassed a few days ago.)
What I do know is that every single one of those 600 episodes has changed me.
Laughing with the likes of @keiradamato, @des_linden, @bygolly.molly, @michelleisawolf, and the Emmas (@emmajanelbates and @emmacoburn).
Learning firsthand about what it takes to be a professional athlete, thanks to @elleruns_4_her_life, @nell_rojas_running, @aishapraughtleer, the Emilys (@em_sisson_, @emilyinfeld, @em_durgin), and the Courtneys (@courtneyfrerichs, @courtneydauwalter, @courtsasport20).
Inspired by the bravery, guts, and authenticity of @nikkihiltz, @fleshmanflyer, @karagoucher, @adriannehaslet, @ncrunnerjacky, @allie_ostrander, @alisonmdesir, and @alexipappas.
The moms on the run: @smevaughn, @mollyhuddle, @shalaneflanagan, @profemilyoster, @sarahall3, and @aliphine.
The Peloton instructors — @mattwilpers, @jesssims, @becsgentry, @jesskingnyc, @oliviaamato, @mattymaggiacomo, @iamkirstenferguson — and the everyday runners.
The ones we’ve lost: Gabe Grunewald and Saila Hanninen. ♥️
Friends, strangers, and former strangers turned friends.
And the bucket listers — the people who have been on my wish list since day one.
Today, I got to check off another one of those: two hours at the mic with marathoner (!!!) @elliekemper.
Here’s to the next 600.
Thank you so darn much for joining me on the run.
