Last night I took two Tylenol PM tablets and spritzed my nose with a whole lotta Afrin nasal spray.
Then I gave myself the morning off from working out.
I swear, I woke up a new person today.
Now I’m not going to jump to conclusions and say I’m cured, but I do feel so much better today. Even if it’s only temporary, I’m happy to have slept for eight blissful hours (pretty much unheard of in my life these days) and to be able to breathe again.
Of course, today isn’t all sunshine and rainbows.
In fact, there’s no sunshine at all.
But maybe there will be a rainbow later.
A colorless day calls for a cheery-colored shirt, don’t you think?
This short-sleeved sweater was my obsession for a long time. It’s BCBG but I snagged it on major sale at Filene’s Basement a few years ago. It’s all pilly now because I used to wear it so often, but I still love it.
Here’s what’s coming up today:
- Work, work, work
- Leftover fish for lunch (yum!)
- A Whole Foods trip at some point
- Afternoon meetings
- My favorite spinning class after work (!!!)
- Attempting to find something to make for dinner that doesn’t involve a microwave. Suggestions?
SOME THINGS TO TALK ABOUT: Today I have two questions…
- As much as I love my job, there are days like today — when it’s raining and disgusting out — that I just want to give in to my lazy side (which I don’t do often enough) and stay in bed watching movies all day. What’s your go-to rainy day activity? Do you stay in and bake cookies? Cuddle up with a loved one (dogs count)? Or are you ambitious and get out in the rain?
- I’m still working on making my apartment less like a dorm and more like a big girl home. What’s your favorite thing in your house or apartment? A piece of furniture? A decoration? A dog?

No matter how great the job is, rainy or cold days it’s nice to curl up on the couch with a good book, magazine, TV show, or movie. Or, if you have an animal, cuddle with it (i don’t right now though). Glad you’re feeling a little better today!
I hear you sister on the wanting to curl up and wear PJs! However, hunter rain boots have seriously changed my life when it comes to commuting and dealing with the rain in the city 🙂
My favorite decorations in my apartment would have to be my cottage/nautical theme I have going on…nothing too wild, but some star fish, beach photos & memories, it definitely kept me sane this winter!!!
I like to make popcorn and play rummy when its raining. Especially if the lights go out! It makes me feel like i’m a pioneer or something. Also, when I’m not feeling well, if I skip my early AM workout, it usually makes me feel a heck of a lot better! So I usually just go in the afternoons (enter: your fave spinning class!)
It’s raining here in Boston today too, and I was totally dreading leaving for work this morning! I love to stay inside and bake when the weather is bad, but sometimes a good run in the rain can also be fun and put me in a better mood. I only did a couple miles today, but the rain actually made me feel a little less in that “funk” that I usually feel on rainy days!
New York is so gross today – where is the sun from Monday?? Wah.
Your WF trip and after-work spin class sound like fun 🙂
I love your outfit today…ok, every day 🙂 I’m glad you’re feeling better! On rainy days I love naps! There’s something super comforting about napping (preferably with the window open) snuggled up under a fluffy comforter. And my favorite decoration in our apartment is a painting we picked up in Key West last year – we randomly saw it at the sunset festival and after talking to the artist we both wanted the original…paid an arm and a leg for it, but we both love looking at it still almost a year later!
YAY for feeling better!! It’s always really hard for me to take a day off when I’m sick, but it usually helps a ton.
Rainy day activity = sitting on the couch watching the Real Housewives and reading blogs. Unfortunately, I don’t have cable here, so it only happens when I’m visiting my parents.
1.) Definitely a baking girl when it comes to the rain.. but for some reason they don’t let you keep ovens in a dorm room.. Random I know. So movie watching is the way to go!
YAY! Glad you are feeling better AND that you skipped your AM workout. I’m proud of you. 😉 And I am SO jealous of that sweater, I want it!
Rainy days are so perfect for tea/hot chocolate and curling up with a book! Its always days like today that make me want to stay home and relax.
I’m so glad you’re feeling better this morning. There’s nothing like a good night’s sleep.
I think there’s nothing better on a rainy day than a warm bed, baggy sweats, and my puggle. In fact, I went to spin this morning, so I could get straight into some sweatpants after work and do nothing. I’m really looking forward to it!
Direct Quote from my morning commute this morning “let’s go back home. it’s the perfect day to just stay in bed all day!”
If I actually could stay home today, I would have spent the day in my sweats, wrapped in a blanket, watching cheesy feel good movies and eating chocolate. Not that that’s totally different from most days…but you know what I mean.
Glad you are feeling better. I do have a warning though! Be CAREFUL with Afrin. I know how awesome it is because it suddenly allows you the breath. But do not use it too often… or for a long period of time(3-4 days max).
I did use it too often and for too long.. and my nose began to DEPEND on it to breath. I was legit congested all the time.. thought I had developed some strange allergy at 23 years old. In reality.. I had something called rebound effect. I stopped using it (which was SOO hard because I could not breath clearly without it) … and these mystery “allergies” disappeared.
I know! My plan is to only use the spray before bed while I’m sick and only if absolutely necessary. My mom was hesitant to even give me the bottle at first because so many people get addicted to it. I promise to use sparingly!
I love that shirt, it is so pretty. 🙂 My favorite rainy day activity is reading a good book in bed. There is just something about it that makes it so relaxing to me.
I love the use of quality candles and a vase of fresh flowers 🙂 Always great to come home to!

That sweater is super cute and very flattering! I have trouble finding sweaters that work with an, ahem, large bust, but that one does.
Cute umbrella! I love laying in bed and reading. Wish I was doing that right now.
I never answer your questions (I just leave random comments), so I’ll try for the first time!
1. I actually absolutely love spring/summer rain (freezing cold rain is a little different). I love to get out there and get a fun run in. Otherwise … freezing cold rain tends to turn me inside. Love cooking and/or reading on these days.
2. We snagged a Room and Board couch from a friend who was leaving NYC a few months ago, and it was truly a great piece to acquire! They have such beautiful fabrics and structures — we almost always get a comment on the couch from a new visitor (doesn’t that almost seem weird?).
Glad to hear you’re feeling better. I almost always have to get 8 hours of sleep – otherwise, I can get really grumpy during the day. 🙂
PS — for dinner tonight, if you can, definitely try the chicken salad recipe I sent via comment a few days ago — it’s a winner!
Hi! I am so happy I found your blog (Christine from bun&borough sent it to me). I am a fellow NYC runner and blogger. Look forward to hearing about everything running!
