Time To Take Action

It’s Day 5 of “Ali is sick” and boy is this getting old!

So now I’m taking action. I’ve been resting and trying to get more sleep, but that alone obviously isn’t doing the trick. My throat is still so sore that I feel like I’m swallowing fire. I was hoping the sinus issues would go away on their own, but they aren’t.

I’m home sick from work today. Yesterday I was miserable sitting at the office trying to be productive while my equilibrium played tricks on me.

Admittedly I attempted a yoga class last night with Ashley. It didn’t go so well for me. I wish I could say that it felt good to do something after all this rest, but being inverted did nothing to help the sinus pressure I’m dealing with.

Fun pose. Not fun for my head though.

The plan today is to stay in bed, drink tons of water, keep popping Vitamin C tablets (I finally picked some up last night) and do some work (it’s unavoidable).

I do have a prescription for an antibiotic that I never filled earlier this week.

If you don’t mind me getting personal, I’ll explain to you why I never filled the antibiotic, since many of you inquired.

(Guys may want to stop reading at this point. Things are about to get girly.)

Antibiotics always, without fail, lead to yeast infections for me. Those don’t go away overnight and they are miserable. My thought when I was prescribed an antibiotic was that I’d rather run next weekend’s half marathon with a sore throat and achy ears than with a “down there” problem.

Now you know.

But I think I’m caving. This sickness seems to need more than willpower to go away, so I’m going to get the prescription filled this morning. In the meantime, I’m open to any remedies y’all may have for preventing that less-than-pleasant antibiotic side effect.

I’m sad that it’s beautiful outside and I’m not running. But I know it’s for the best.

Off to go to Duane Reade…in my PJs. Don’t judge.

TELL ME: What are your thoughts on antibiotics? I’ve read a lot lately that says they cure sinus infections. I’ve also read that they make them worse. I know most of you aren’t doctors (though if you are, yay! cure me!) but I’d love to hear your thoughts on how you deal with being sick beyond having a cold.

  1. I second the probiotics! You can get tablets at Whole Foods or I also drink Lifeway Kefir or put it in a smoothie. Works wonders for me. Good luck and feel better!

  2. Oh, feel better dear heart! And yogurt all the way. My docs have been telling me this for years and I’ve never had a problem. Hope it does the trick for another Ali, too!

  3. I get sinus infections all the time..a Z pack usually helps but doesn’t make it disppear instantly..what I would suggest is to up your yogurt consumption. the cultures help to regulate the yeast production..like overdue it on the yogurt. I hate yogurt but when taking an antibiotic..I choke it down. Also, a probiotic is a must when taking antibiotics if you ask me…good luck! and I hope you feel better!!

  4. I have had to take sooo many antibiotics due to the sinus, tonsil, and strep issues that wouldn’t go away. Here’s what I do. Probiotics! 2-3 hours after you take the antibiotic, pop a probiotic to replenish the bacteria your body needs. Keep taking the probiotics 2-3 weeks after you finish the antibiotics.

  5. Not sure if this will help- but I think my roommate had a similar issue and she used to eat a lot of yogurt to prevent it. You could ask your doctor if that might help counteract the negative effect of the antiobiotics.

  6. Sorry that you’re still sick-I’d definitely be hesitant to take meds too if it lead to that problem most of the time. I’m wondering if your doc could prescribe something along with the antibiotic so that you could take it at the first sign of infection, so that you don’t have quite as big of an issue? Just a thought…

  7. I am a big advocate of medicine and therefore normally take antibiotics when prescribed. However, I’ve never had any issues with them. 🙁 Sorry bud!

  8. OMG Ali, not to contribute to the female awkwardness, but I have the same problem ALWAYS… and am so afraid to go on the antibiotic for the same exact reason. I’ve found that if I take cranberry supplements (found at your local CVS), it sometimes helps prevent the issue! Good Luck on your half marathon btw!!
